A 10-Minute Meditation to Meet Your Spirit Animal

You don't need incense, a drum circle, or any special belief to meet your spirit animal. You need ten quiet minutes and a little willingness to listen inward. This guided visualisation draws on a technique used across shamanic traditions โ€” the inner journey โ€” adapted into something simple and secular.

Before you begin

Find a quiet place where you won't be disturbed. Sit or lie comfortably. Turn your phone to silent. The goal isn't to force an answer but to relax enough that one can surface.

The meditation

1. Settle (2 minutes). Close your eyes. Breathe in for four counts, out for six. Let your shoulders drop. Feel the weight of your body held by the floor or chair.

2. Walk into the forest (3 minutes). Picture a path leading into a forest at dusk. Notice the details โ€” the light, the sound, the air on your skin. Walk slowly. You're safe here. The forest knows you.

3. Arrive at a clearing (3 minutes). The path opens into a clearing. Sit at its centre. Then simply wait, and watch the edges. Don't decide what should come โ€” let an animal approach in its own time. It might be expected or surprising. Notice how it moves, how it looks at you, how you feel in its presence.

4. Ask one question (1 minute). When it's close, ask silently: What do you want me to know? Don't analyse the answer โ€” just receive whatever rises, in words, images, or feeling.

5. Return (1 minute). Thank the animal. Walk back down the path. Open your eyes. Write down whatever came, before the details fade.

If nothing comes

That's normal, especially the first time. The mind needs practice to quiet down. Try again another evening โ€” or come at it from the other direction and take the spirit animal quiz first, then meditate on the beast it reveals. Sometimes naming the animal is what lets it finally appear.
